I say that DELL will be the only direct-from-manufacturer to survive. As far as retailers go, I suppose that HP/Compaq will be there along with a few others that come and go.

Gateway will surely be gone. There is no way to compete with DELL's efficiencies, brand name and customer base. Gateway is trying to beat them on price in order to build market share. Their billion in cash will run out way before they might even make a dent in market share.

By the way, I've been reading that a further price war is coming this summer. It will make matters even worse for Gateway. Dell can surely sacrifice some earnings while Gateway runs out of cash.

I agree. I don't see Gateway surviving in this environment. DELL will out last all the others.
