Another interesting Utah experience is driving thru Arches National Park at dawn. Its very large rock formations are interesting at any time of day, but they make the park seem like another planet in the early morning light.

I'm visiting S. Utah right now, this place is "rock heaven"...star "heaven" <gg> too....we went into the Red Cliff desert last night for some star gazing....saw 4 planets, and the 3 moons of Jupiter...

You've probably been here, but if not....try to make it sometime. I guarantee you will enjoy it.

I haven't been there yet, Mrs. Peel, but I've been told it is, indeed, rock heaven. Awhile ago, I picked up a couple of books on canyoneering in S. Utah, so it's now on my Gotta-Go-There-Some-Time-Soon list.

Have travelled around a fair bit through Arizona though. Some amazing geology -- all different kinds.
One of my favourite spots, not spectacular, but interesting, is along the Gila River -- Rte 77, between Winkelman and Christmas on the way up to Globe.
Layers and layers of folded, shattered rock, exposed by the river and continuous fracturing.
BTW, further north up that road, there are some pretty nice stands of saguaro, although, I think the road from Oracle to Florence..route 79, where Tom Mix met his waterloo, may have some of the best cactus anywhere. JMHO, of course.
Another neat place in the same general area is Devil's Canyon
on the road between Superior and Globe. Not nice driving,
but there are som rather impressive ancient granite hoodoo-like formations.
And then, of course, there is Red Rock country.
Actually, where *can't* you go in Arizona without seeing something neat?
I hear that much of Utah is the same.
Gotta go there.
