You raise some interesting points. I wonder whether Jeff has had any thoughts on this -- he has a degree in Psychology; I wonder to what degree he uses that knowledge in observing what goes on here. Hmmm -- do you suppose he's the one working on a Master's thesis on the etiology of posting psychologies? But most of the instances you have cited are unhealthy. I wonder whether for many people SI, and other chat rooms, can in fact be healthy outlets for otherwise repressed feelings? Is it, for example, good for jla to have a venue to let out his aggression and anger? Or does that simply feed and exacerbate the emotions? I don't have any background in psychology, so I have no idea. But I think it's an interesting question. I wonder what sorts of work have been done on this, if any. Given that large scale easy-access internet chat is a quite recent phenomenon, maybe not yet. I don't have access to the journals, where I assume a lot of this would be taking place if it were taking palace.
