It's an issue that permeates many areas of society.

It certainly does. In the kinder, gentler society we try to ensure that no one feels pain or experiences failure. So, 80% of Harvard students graduate with high honors. In the college where my wife teaches, ALL 17 of the students in her MA class are carrying 4.0's. It makes everyone feel really good about themselves. Except, maybe, the harder working and (gulp) smarter students who lose any distinction for their accomplishments.

I am not mocking the noble intent. It's probably better that my son-in-law who can't stand to lose, and who therefore always beats his six-year old in whatever game they play.

There's gotta be some middle ground here.

One thing I do believe is that experiencing failure, and learning from it, is an essential lesson we all need to learn in life.
