In Islam there is no such a thing as religion Authority. This is one of the strongest points about Islam.

There may not be a religious hierarchy but there sure is a body of religous law, with precedents. The Shari'a judges are not just making it all up as they go, now are they?

What is the difference between a Sunni and a Shia? (sorry if misspelled). I thought they followed different parts of the Prophet's lineage, is not religious authority vested in his antecedents? What is a Fatwa? How are they enforced without religious authority? Taliban ruled Afghanistan how? they were students, right? Perhaps your point is that the Quran is missused by many? I know the Bible is. I am not trying to poke fun at you. I am glad to have someone to help me understand a religion that is missunderstood here.
