Brumar89:

Pakistan is a Muslim country. It does not have free elections. It has a military dictator and has had that form of Govt. for about 90% of its existence. However, it is important to understand that the Muslim religion itself has nothing to do with democracy. There are dictators even in South America and they are not Muslims. What I have observed that poverty is usually what causes people to become violent. In years gone by, the Communists (Marxist-Leninists) promised emancipation from poverty and incited the masses to revolt. They failed miserably.

Now we have the extremist Muslim fundamentalist clerics singing the same tune as the Marxists-Leninists did and they are promising not only emancipation from poverty but even Heaven for those who sacrifice their lives.

This has got to be dealt with immediately by the US before some despot gets a sophisticated "Muslim bomb". And Pakistan should be the immediate target of the US foreign policy since they have some modicum of a nuclear arsenal. And with Osama sitting somewhere in Pakistan, my feeling is not all that good right now as far as the "Muslim" nuclear threat goes.

The Arabs have been for the most part monarchies and the US could effectively use them to counter the "Muslim" bomb threat by turning them against those fundamental extremists. That is why it is very important for th US to settle the Israeli=Palestenian issue very quickly and move onto the larger threat. And on that front, the extremist Hamas is threatening to step in or even displace the more moderate (relatively) Arafat.

As they say in the world of politics there are no permanent friends; there are only permanent interests. The US cannot press the issue of Israel to far for the Hamas to take over. And Israel on its part should take of the extremist settlers who I believe from reports have threatened to kill Sharon if he accedes to the concept of a Palestenian state.
