Roebear, I wanted to move up here for a long time. Was overseas until mid 98 in a northern Norske climate. After I repatriated I kept busy until something eventually came up to seriously evaluate. I found out the tax angle was a huge positive, especially if I assumed investment gains.

The AK pay is not what it used to be, but the cost of living isn't nearly as bad as in days gone by either. Some places in AK have lower cost of living than the lower 48 by far, due to housing. But the taxes are especially still hard to beat. I suspect it will gradually change, but it will probably always be less tax intensive than the lower 48.

Lot of money being pumped into my area now. Mainly military, a good portion of that Bush's anti-missile program. Don't quite know what to think of all that. Was reading an aerospace materials magazine today. The materials technology is amazing, and appears to be by in large driven by military spending. Don't see how this country can keep it up.

Spend baby spend. Appears to me Bush's admin will soon be running up huge deficits, not unlike some of the more recent Repub predecessors. Lucky Bill hit the right portion of the curve, and avoided that. Will make for interesting politics later this year, when they have to raise the debt ceiling.
