I think even the sycophants themselves would agree, plied w. sufficient libation. The question I try to ask, but rarely get response to, is "do you make an income from the government, directly or indirectly?". That includes several millions of people, who see this bloat of government and military as a personally good thing, so try to rationalize as well as possible, yet due to several inconsistencies it comes out awkward. Like, "small government" hypocrites voting huge farm bills, giant useless military programs, multibillion-dollar corporate welfare, and then sounding a bit flat and defensive. Extreme hawkishness itself is shrill and obfuscating exactly for that reason: careful examination of results won't support the kinds of resolutions constantly going forward. More combat is created simply out of habit, with hardly a wink toward an excuse. The hired intellectuals are trotted out to give efficient phrases and excuses ("we didn't have actionable intelligence" sez Cheney, instead of the more honest "we're taking this all the way to the bank!" metaphorically, or maybe not so metaphorically speaking.
