The worse virus are the ones that aren't obvious. To true geeks, the "wipe out your hard drive" virus is kind of like wrapping dog poop in newspaper and setting it one fire - childish, newbie.

I personally think the anti-virus software industry is a big scam or at least not that effective.

tomato,

your 1st priority must be to get rid of the virus. have you tried norton?(mcafee is neither a real product nor company.it's a wonder they are still in business)

if norton doesn't work, beg an extremely knowledgeable friend who has dealt with virus issues to help.sounds like 3 - 12 hours to me.

it's my understanding that trying to fix problems without getting the virus off 1st will just be a waste of time.

norton should at least be able to tell you if you have infected files.

Tomato
FWIW: I appear to have had the exact same problem you were having.
I have win.98 second edition and my scan disk would run but only after several attemps. It would stop and give me the message saying it had stopped and started did I want to recieve the message again.
Also, it took me over 5 hours to defrag the other day because Defrag kept starting and stopping...over an over and over. I also was having the same problem with Windows shutting down on me (so far it hasn't done it again although I have only been on the pc for about 4 hours). I also was having another problem, my hard drive kept making a noise almost all day like it was running a program or something.

I did what the thread riders suggested and took Microsoft Office out of my start up menu and I also took off my screensaver. So far it has worked. My scan disk ran fast, my defrag appeared to run at normal speed, I am no longer having the noise I mentioned above.

Hope it works for you.

T,

This site has been posted here before but for the sake of those who might have missed it. Grisoft's AVG anti-virus software has been recommended and seems to be a pretty effective anti-virus program. It's also free. It has an email filter/scanner that seems to do the job. Registering at the site is fairly painless...no spam.

I use it on a win xp machine with no glitches.

So for all of you who think you might have a virus that your existing (or non-existing) anti-virus program is not catching...it's worth a try.
