Neo, The men, like Rommel, were from proud, military, traditions, and to a point, felt that the Fatherland was over all as far of the rest of the world was concerned. I believe their intent was to fight for the elevation of Germany prominence among the nations of the world. At first, I doubt that they knew just how crazy Hitler was. It is to Rommel's credit, and the others that participated, that they tried to end the blood letting by assassinating Hitler. It's too bad they did not succeed.
