In 1983, former Attorney General Ed Meese was forced to resign due to his involvement in a proposed Iraqi pipeline that would cross near the Golan Heights and end at Aqaba. Bechtel was to build the pipeline. Saddam wanted assurances that Israel would never attack the pipeline.
