Hi E,

Re: Has anyone else read this about Sartre having his mother open his mail, and if so, can they give a source?

I haven't heard of that one but it reminded me of the transformation that is occurring in Afghanistan. A couple of decades ago, women always walked ten paces behind their husbands. Today, they are ten paces ahead. Seeing this, a NOW representative from the US thought it was marvelous, so she asked how this remarkable bit of woman's liberation came about. The Afghani replied: "Land mines."

I haven't read much about Sartre, but I read this book a few years ago, and I know I've come across that same factoid, so I think there's a good chance it's in here.
