I can see 'Safron' ruling India! <The furious negotiations that Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee had in the past week with representatives of two of the Hindu extremist groups - the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) - to resolve the Ayodhya issue makes fascism an acceptable aspect of Indian politics. The two organisations, which have been rightly kept out of the arena of legitimate politics ever since India became independent and adopted the secular creed - however flawed it may have been - have now moved to the centre-stage.

The RSS and the VHP are literally holding the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government to ransom, and forcing an illegal compromise on a national government which ought to be representing the interests and aspirations of the billion plus population. They do not, by any stretch of imagination, represent either Hinduism or Hindus. The membership of these organisations is confined to the decadent and conservative elements of upper caste Hindus, especially Brahmins.

The irony is that in a democratic country, where parties are voted in and voted out of power by the will of the people, the Vajpayee government is making deals with unelected and unrepresentative organisations. This is a classic instance of fascism - the will of the people is subverted by minority groups backed by muscle power.

The shameful thing is that the BJP has openly and unabashedly surrendered to the RSS and the VHP. It was indeed a known fact that the BJP was ruled by the backroom boys of the RSS, and the VHP is almost like a sub-committee of the RSS. Some quibblers may want to argue that it is the RSS which is a subcommittee of the VHP. It does not really matter. The reality is that the BJP, the RSS and the VHP now form the fascist triad in India, and this is an official fact.> from Tehelka..
