RtS & all,
some Japan update..

After the upgrades of US analog ("mixed signal") semis like NSM and FCS yesterday their japanese counterparts were doing very well today... After a period of consolidation they are up nicely again...

New Japan Radio (6911.J) up 8% to 840 on almost 300k volume. New 52 week high. It seems there were estimates raised for next year. This stock is still trading at a very low valuation vs. its US and Asian based peers. Price to sales around 0.50. Compare this to a mean PSR of 3+ in the US. This is one of the reasons why I honestly think that NJR could attack its all time high of around 1600 going forward...

Asahi Kasei (3407.J) - diversified conglomerate with a big analog semi subsidiary AKM inched up almost 3% to close at 463 on average volume of around 5m. Most recently they did some restructuring, selling their low alcohol liquor business and buying in the hemodialysis equipment division of a former competitor. This strategic reorientation makes absolute sense IMHO and is one of the reasons why I like this company - more changes in the business portfolio were envisaged for the next 2 years. More a blue chip than NJR and definitely attractively valued at a Price/Sales Ratio of 0.55

all the best
CROSSY

4:38PM Semtech beats by a penny, issues guidance (SMTC) 34.75 -1.01: Reports Q1 EPS of $0.13, $0.01 better than the Multex consensus; revs were $49.2 mln, vs consensus of $48.4 mln. Co expects Q2 sales to increase 5-7% over Q1 (about $51.7-$52.6 mln) and EPS of $0.14, vs consensus of $50.8 mln and EPS of $0.13.

3:14PM Nasdaq Composite Intraday : -- Technical -- Highlighted the 1660 support this morning (see 11:15 comment) with the index recently testing. While it has held thus far, will need to see some follow through upticks beyond intraday resistance at 1668 and more importantly 1674/1675 to improve the very short term tone. Failure leaves the door open initially to the bottom of the May 14 gap at 1653. Congestive support follow thereafter in the 1643/1640 area.

1:25PM Motorola (MOT) 16.86 +0.06: -- Update -- Hearing from sources that company is reaffirming guidance at the Lehman Global Wireless Conference. MOT last issued guidance on its April 17 earnings conference call.

9:14AM QLogic chip integrated into Cisco router (QLGC) 50.41: Announces that its Fibre Channel "switch-on-a-chip" has been implemented in the new Cisco SN 5428 Storage Router.

8:31AM Qualcomm reaffirms Q3 outlook (QCOM) 31.89: Co sees Q3 earnings of $0.21-$0.23 (consensus Multex $0.22) and expects revenues to increase 3-6% sequentially. For 2002, QCOM sees EPS of $0.90-$0.95 (consensus $0.90) and rev growth of 4-8%.

2:55PM Motorola (MOT) 16.51 -0.29: Following a meeting with mgmt, USB Piper Jaffray lends their support to MOT's turnaround process and reiterates their Outperform rating citing enhanced confidence that MOT's business is gaining strength on several fronts. Mgmt was bullish on its continued ability to turn the co's handset business around, indicating MOT will introduce 25 new models this year, and will have a CDMA v.60 for Sprint by the end of 2003; co. also remains focused on eliminating cost from the infrastructure business model

1:14PM Chartered Semi (CHRT) 23.45 +0.34: The semi foundry has defied street expectations on more than one occasion this qtr; co beat for Q1 on 4/18 and now expects Q2 revenues to grow approx 40% sequentially. Firms remain upbeat on the name and expect continued outperformance for the rest of the year. Soundview raises their street high ests and pulls in their break-even qtr to Q3 2003 from Q4; firm maintains their Buy rating and would become more aggressive on shares during H2, when shipments of 0.13 micron copper wafers begin to ramp. Pacific Growth Equities believes this has positive implications for BRCM since CHRT is one of two foundries that BRCM uses.
