The white trash line, and what they would say, confused me. Still does, actually, though i'm so tired i won't go try to parse it.

One effect they have is that if you do see a black or hispanic in a decent job or school, there is a tendency to think that they gt there because of affirmative action and are not as qualified as a white in the same position.

I wrote this in my first post:

"Even though I think affirmative action has done more harm than good -- for example in devaluing or making suspect legitimately-won recognition (just one example) -- I found that moment painful, and could understand as he spoke that many blacks must hear my views on the subject with a strong sense of irony."

So we aren't exactly arguing here.

My whole point was to point out that I had a moment of clear perception of how ironical, and even ludicrous, the complaints about affirmative action by whites may well seem to blacks, who see affirmative action as having been business-as-usual, until the tables got turned.

Which doesn't mean I'm for it.
