"No question, when he walked into the room he was shaken," one senator later said. What followed was a blustery, incoherent monologue, complete with podium thumping, in which Dubya denounced the scandal over 9/11 as nothing more than a partisan attack by Democrats. With no logic whatsoever, the Boy King strutted and spluttered from topic to topic, ranging from the Crusader missile - "I mean it, I'll veto it" - (did he threaten to hold his breath, too?) to North Korean dictator Kim Jong Il. Knowledgeable observers could detect amid Dubya's disjointed frothing some bit and pieces of oral advice from his aides backing the building of the Star Wars national missile defense -- bits and pieces strung together with nothing at all. "Stunned senators didn’t know quite what to make of the performance. 'It was like in church, when the sermon goes on too long and you’re not sure what the point is,' one told NEWSWEEK. 'Nobody dared look at anybody else.'" And this, mind you, was in front of a closed session of G.O.P. senators. No wonder the White House won't allow Boy King to hold a legitimate press conference -- at least not until he's got his excuse coaching down better than now. All the more shocking, the author of Newsweek's article was none other than MWO's Whore of the Year, Howard "The Duck" Fineman. Sure, Howard couldn't resist doing a little whoring here too, spreading discredited innuendo about the Clinton Administration and dishing out the usual palaver about Bush's mystical "bond with the American people." But even Howard The Duck seems shaken, at least for the moment. As does Spikey Isikoff. As does, more important, Team Bush. The article quotes one Bush staffer sneering at Condi Rice's press briefing last week: "She wasn’t ready for prime time." Hardliners are disgusted with Ari Fleischer for not sandbagging the press even more than he has. Even G.O.P. uber-pollster Frank Luntz is distressed at the mixed signals and opacity of the Bush operation. "But," concludes Newsweek, "a habit of disclosure isn’t in the Bush genetic makeup. The son of a CIA chief, Bush has always preferred to operate with secrecy and surprise. Cheney sees Congress and the media as annoyances—at best. This view was reinforced by the advent of war." One might have added Enron, Cheney's Energy Task Force, Social Security manipulation, phony budget reports, and a slew of other deceptions and non-disclosures by the Oil Buddy Bunker Boys. And at the top of it all -- the deception, now finally cracking, that the unelected man in the White House is a competent leader instead of an underinformed, overmatched, vindictive, and helpless tool of his father's friends and advisers. A deception that. once finally exposed, is truly frightening, to the American people and the rest of the world. And.... BUSINESS WEEK'S FIVE BIG 9/11 QUESTIONS Who's Running The White House? In its latest posting, BusinessWeek Online has posed five tough questions to the White House on the 9/11 scandal. Let's see if the Media Whores press Ari for some answers: 1) Who in the Justice Dept. and its FBI unit knew about the memos from the field raising questions about Arabs training in flight schools? 2) Why, if Attorney General John Ashcroft stopped flying on commercial aircraft over the summer, did Justice not issue sterner warnings to airlines and the public about threats to commercial aviation? 3) Why did Vice-President Richard Cheney ask congressional leaders not to investigate the events leading up to September 11? 4) Why did Administration officials keep repeating the mantra "We had no information about specific threats" when some of them were aware of at least nonspecific threats of hijackings? 5) Why did the Administration decide not to tell the public of the information it knew until the story leaked to the press?
