I think Sowell has too much integrity to do that....

I was so impressed with his book, Ethnic America, that I still have it despite winnowing down my library. It did a marvelous job of capturing my experiences as a second generation American. I loaned it out at lot, had many discussions about it, and was a real fan, impressed with his smarts and integrity. Over time, I stopped reading his work mostly because I pretty stopped reading, given job demands. It's only since I've been on the Internet that I discovered him as a pundit. Since then I've read several things from him that sounded like your basic mindless rant--RW sloganeering--and I was very disappointed. There was one instance where he was totally lacking in understanding of the subject, but I can no longer recall what that subject was.

So, what I meant about "his reviews" was a shortcut in lieu of explaining how he fell off his pedestal. I haven't followed him enough to have any explanation for any of this, only the impression that my esteem was not as warranted as I thought or is no longer warranted. That's not to say that he's become a hack, only that I don't read his stuff with the reverence I once did. There was a time when your saying that Sowell liked his book would have been enough for me, but no longer.
