Today, sixteen of the Bombardier trains moved directly into full passenger service on suburban services south east of London, another five trains have been made available to Connex for driver training purposes. The agreement calls for the full fleet of 55 trains (210 cars) to be in passenger service before the end of 2002. Rik Dobbelaere, President Intercity Trains for Bombardier Transportation, said: "We are pleased to have unlocked the difficulties surrounding the introduction of these trains and we believe that our customer will be delighted with the quality of this fleet. Our Electrostar product is already proving very popular with the travelling public in the South of England where they are in operation between London, Essex and Southend. We are looking forward to the successful introduction of many more Electrostar fleets in the UK." Bombardier has undertaken a number of modifications to the trains, which include software upgrades to facilitate easy to follow operational processes during coupling and uncoupling.
