New Delhi, May 21 (Bloomberg) -- Abdul Ghani Lone, an opposition leader in the northern Indian province of Jammu and Kashmir, was shot dead at a public meeting in the state capital of Srinagar, Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah announced. The shooting came on the day Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee began a three-day visit to the province, amid escalating tension between India and Pakistan after an attack last week on an army camp in the province that killed 35 people. Lone was chairman of the Jammu and Kashmir People's Conference and a member of the executive council of the All-Party Hurriyat Conference. The Hurriyat is a grouping of 25 political, social and religious groups belonging to the Indian province that wants the Kashmiris to be allowed to determine whether the territory should be independent, part of India, or part of Pakistan. The gunmen were dressed in police uniforms, Zafar Meraj, editor of the Kashmir Monitor newspaper, who was present at the meeting, said in an interview on the telephone. Crowds at Lone's residence, where his body was taken, chanted anti-Pakistan slogans, Meraj said. India and Pakistan have massed about 1 million troops on their border since a Dec. 13 attack on the Indian parliament. India said Kashmiri separatists backed by its neighbor were behind the attack. Pakistan has denied the accusation. The South Asian, nuclear-armed neighbors have fought three wars with each other since 1947, two of them over Kashmir. --Bharat Ahluwalia in the New Delhi newsroom (91-11) 334-8812, or at nmohideen@bloomberg.net Editor: Mohideen Story illustration: For the map, click on {MAPS <GO>}.
