That is a different enough take on StarOffice 6.0's from Mossberg's that it looks like I'm going to have to shell out the $80 and try it myself.

People who require "perfect compatibility" don't get it from version to version of Office, either, IMHO.

People unhappy with Microsoft. That's nothing new. MSFT established a brand name when most PC buyers were clueless. As the public comes to expect quality and performance, MSFT and their junk products fade.

The company has a lot of cash, and thus may be able to escape into a business line where it can prosper. But SUNW is a lot farther along in adapting to the new post-bubble trends...

Ref < Star Office vs Microsoft Office >

I presume that The Star Office can read Microsoft Word and Excel Output Files. But can the Star Office generate files compatible with Word and Excel ?

In this age of E-mailing Word and Excel attachments, the Star Office must read files from other users outside the company. But the Star Office must also be able to send files to people outside the organization, and have them read them. That is the tryanny of the massive installed base of Microsoft Office. This requirement may be critical until the StarOffice installed base becomes large enough, and most users have Star Office anyway.
