Bush's reaction to the news this week was also bad. Yep, I agree. I thought, at first, that this whole business of what did Bush know and when was the proverbial political slam dunk for them. It seemed self-evident that Bush knew nothing serious before 9-11, nor that anyone genuinely expected him to. I figured it for a two or three day press attack, with some soothing words from the powers that be. And we would be on to something else. But Cheney fanned the fires of presidential criticism on Sunday; Bush attacks the straw person; and we're off and running. I do expect to see some higher level scapegoats in the next several months. I doubt it will be Ashcroft, though that would please me greatly; and I doubt it will be Tenet, about which I have no feelings. Their strategy here reminds me of Cheney's strategy with requests to open up the documents on the energy planning stuff. That was very unwise politically; looks the same again.

The difference was the Warren Report was started after John Kennedy was killed. We were not at war. We are currently at war. One might hope there is confidential information within the confines of the reports that would stay confidential, and not broadcast to those in the world who mean to do us harm, and have said so publically. We also know that there are people within the system who either 1) can't wait to leak information to the media worldwide, however harmful it might be, and 2) who lie. (as in Jim McDermott...5 years later he tells the truth..."yes, I did leak the Gingrich tape, and yes, I lied about it....")
