According to CTIA’s Semi-Annual Wireless Industry Survey, total wireless revenues were up 22.6 percent to $34 billion for the last six months of December 2001, compared to $27.8 billion for the period ended Dec. 2000, the study says. The U.S. had 128.4 million wireless users at the end of last year, and total revenue for wireless services in 2001 was $65 billion. Full results of the study are available online at wow-com.com . “There were more minutes of use (of wireless phones) by consumers in the last half of 2001 than in all of 2000,” says CTIA president Tom Wheeler. Mobile users in the U.S. gobbled up 456 billion billable minutes in 2001, according to the study. “That’s an encouraging statistic.” Data revenue statistics look much like like wireless voice in its infancy, he says. Data revenue was $545 million as of Dec 2001, up from $211 million for 2000. That outpaces wireless voice’s growth in the mid-1980’s, says Wheeler. These statistics point to a brand new trend -- that of wireless communications as an alternative service to wired communications, Wheeler says. Wireless communications is one of the bright spots in a gloomier than usual telecommunications market, he says. “Why is Wall Street hanging black crepe on this industry,” when the figures show there is vibrant growth, Wheeler questions.
