Been wanting to do it for years anyway, so this just put me over the top on it. Always wanted to know what was behind the crap paneling the prior owner put up to cover up the poured walls. As it turned out, they were fine. He wasn't hiding any cracks or anything, so that was good news. Did find one 2 X 2 that was completely munched and a small 2 X 4 that was also reduced to paper. To get to the back room you have to walk through the landing. The landing has several doors and is basically the lower entry from the garage to the entire house. The stairs go up from there, you can enter the back room (which we are redoing), the TV room, the lower bathroom or three closets. The flooring there is 1967 vintage linoleum. Yes, the real deal. Not the stuff they sell today. We never really liked it much, and have always wanted marble there like I did at the top of the stairs in the foyer. When we bought the house in 1995 we bought marble for upstairs for $2.40 a square. It is called french vanilla and apparently they had someone who wanted all white and rejected anything with any character. Normally sold for $11.20 a square. Well, we saw an ad in the paper the other day for a marble clearance sale....as low as a buck a square. We got marble for the landing for $2.50 a square and the buck a square stuff we bought up and I will put that in the closets. The closets needed 38 square feet, and I don't think you can get any other flooring to do the closets for less than $38, so it was a heck of a deal. I suppose I could have done them in vinyl, but really. I want to live the Slevin style without the Slevin cost so I am going to have marble in my closets! Now, as to when this gets finished...well that will be another story. Suppose I need to add storage costs on the marble to the final tally. -Scott
