But, for what it's worth, my two personal picks for "the greatest Presidential lies ever told" in the "stupidest that ever was" contest would be: 1) Nixon, face-to-face with the American public via the magic of television, telling us all that "there is no war in Cambodia" after he'd launched the invasion. ("Checkers", on the other hand, was just too cute, a masterpiece of political manipulation... I have to give him extra credit and admiration for that.) 2) Bush the first, face-to-face with the World via the magic of television from the U.N., calling on the Kurds to rise up in armed insurrection against the butcher Saddam... promising them the U.S.'s full support... and then reneging, standing by as they were slaughtered, rocketed and machine-gunned from helicopters as our fighters flew high cover in the No-Fly Zone and pleaded fruitlessly with their controllers to be allowed to respond and take out the helicopters and tanks that were slaughtering civilians in their plain sight. (No wait, he actually lied to and back-stabbed *three* separate groups at three different times - the southern Shia, the Kurds, and the INC). Of course, it isn't even necessary to mention the more famous "read my lips" promise which perhaps pales in significance.... Still, it's hard to choose an absolute winner. There are so many great Presidential lies to choose from throughout history, and if we open the contest to all politicians, we'd move into some all-Pro territory. "The stupidest that ever was" indeed!
