The way they (Barrick) can implode is if their hedge book get so far underwater that the contracts are triggered to lower their credit rating and change the stipulations in the contracts as to how much flexibility they have. The example of their announcing that they are now leaving their proceeds with the counterparty banks instead of investing it themselves smells an awfull lot like the first step in that process.

Barrick is now even for the day, the only senior producer with no gain. Unless all of the outstanding shares of abx are owned by members of this board, the skepticism concerning this stock is systemic throughout the market. What is the old axiom, the markets are never wrong.
