scary thought, but didn't the japan recession result in the subsequent record savings binge?

One of the biggest differences between US and Japan aside from the fact that the US has a demand based economy and Japan has a supply based economy is that we allow companies to fail and debt to fall to worthless. Just look at the number of companies that have disappeared from our indices over the last couple of years, then look at the number that have disappeared from the Nikkei. Its their propping up of companies that should be allowed to fail that keeps them locked in the perpetual downturn.
