Norton Firewall has this feature of the user able to manually specify a filter for a popup advertisement. But even then there were a couple that still made it through. Still, looking at the log I discovered that when I was actively surfing the Internet, I encountered on the average of at least one advertisement a minute. So the firewall was able to block over 60 ads for the hour I was using my browser. Without this feature, I have seen three and sometimes four pop up at a time.

Even one of my favorite sites, www.quote.com, started using obnoxious ads. This is a new type of ad that has a figure that "skates" back and forth across the web page. And then it does it again. This makes the info on the web page difficult to use. After a week of this, I wrote them a nasty e-mail. The next they they pulled the ad, and then sent me an e-mail indicating there were others who have complained too. What amazes me is it took their customer to point out the obvious to them, and they only did something about it when enough people complained. I think that site is losing its focus on its client. Many companies are still in an immature stage in their learning how to use advertisements on the Internet to make money. It is too bad there is no common sense being used.
