Fascinating reading list, Frank. Somebody has certainly done a lot of homework.

veddy interesting...

one of the things included there, oddly enough, is an old, second-hand account of Ken Pollack's dissertation. Pollack, the guy who wrote the FA piece on why we should invade Iraq, did an 800-page single-space thesis on twentieth century Arab military history. The gist of it was that they regularly did far worse than they "should" have, given material factors alone, and that the explanation lay in strategic culture. One part of it--the military history part--is appearing soon. The other part--the explanatory part--hasn't yet been published in book form.
