FREMONT, Calif. -- Credence Systems Corp. reported sales of $38.7 million for the second quarter ended April 30, a 47% decrease from $75.6 million in the second quarter of 2001, but a 12% jump from $34.6 million in the previous period.

The net loss for the second quarter of fiscal 2002 was $19.4 million, or $0.32 per share. This compares to a net loss of $36.5 million, or $0.61 per share, including inventory related and other special charges of approximately $48.3 million, in the second fiscal quarter of 2001. It reported a loss of $20.1 million, or $0.33 a share, in the previous quarter.

"We are pleased to report that our revenue and bookings were up sequentially in the second fiscal quarter,” said Graham Siddall, chairman and chief executive of Credence. “In particular, even with an increase in revenues, we are able to report a book to bill over 1.0 for the first time in five quarters," he said.
