The TR100, chosen annually by Technology Review, consists of 100 young individuals whose innovative work in business and technology has a profound impact on today's world. Nominees are recognized for their contribution in transforming the nature of technology in industries varying from computing to biotechnology to energy. Through her research, Wee strives to provide wireless video, sound and other media-rich communications over any network, on any device -- such as a personal digital assistant or cell phone -- anywhere in the world. Today's networks were designed for fixed clients, wired networks and static data. Wee's research focuses on overcoming these challenges in two ways: by adapting traditional media delivery methods for mobile devices and wireless networks and by adapting today's wired networks for mobile, streaming media. Wee and the research group she leads have built up an extensive technology portfolio in video coding, video processing and video communication. "Susie has made an enormous contribution through her streaming media research, vaulting HP to a leading position in media-rich communications," said Dick Lampman, vice president of research at HP and director, HP Labs. "She also has displayed remarkable leadership skills and is constantly motivating and energizing others around her to push the envelope with their own research." Wee manages the HP Mobile Streaming Media Systems project, HP's collaboration with DoCoMo on 4G streaming content delivery networks research and the multi-year research effort between HP and MIT in wireless networking, also announced today. She is being honored today during a conference and awards ceremony at MIT. The event, themed "The Innovation Economy: How Technology is Transforming Existing Businesses and Creating New Ones," includes a full day of conference sessions and panel discussions followed by an evening gala awards ceremony.
