Thanks, Emma. You raise some good points. I would differ slightly in saying that one should put the best reading on things, unless probabilities weigh too strongly against. Thus, if the post would make more sense, or at least be more consistent with what you have seen of the poster, by assuming he was kidding, or had had a bad day, then by all means, give him a break, until it seems to strained to do so. In general, though, people go wrong when they read things into posts. I have too often been the victim of speculations that were off the wall. Long acquaintance might legitimize looking for the undercurrent, but only with caution and careful scrutiny.
