Truth hurts.

Truth #1: this is a difficult problem. To say it's impossible is to give up.

Truth #2: Americans don't like to hear their leaders saying a problem can't be solved, and will kick out anyone who sticks with that attitude.

Regardless of the innate capability of Rumsfeld et al, they will go down with the ship if they don't change their tune.
