Let's straighten that one out. I'm not the guy who came up with that idiotic estimate. I was not even working for the company at the time it was made. I literally laughed out loud when I saw the schedule and budget. And then brought my views to management. The answer was "Too bad. We already won the contract."

All that straigtens out is that, perhaps, you personally are not grossly incompetent. What about the other blithering idiots? The bid proposal draft, made it through some set of review. No one could catch an underbid by a factor of 20? Your competent software engineering group is that far off? Or if you tell me that the bid was made without input from software engineering, what does that say about competence of the management? What did you say about firing incompetents in the private sector? Sounds to me like nearly everyone that was involved in the bid, review, and approval of it must have been sacked. [I'll let the contracts administrator off the hook].
