When people say anti-Semitic, meaning anti-Jewish, why don't they just say anti-Jewish? Semites used to include those living in that region [Israel region] and I suppose it meant kind of Arab looking.

Yeah I laugh when I read people saying the Arabs are anti-Semitic. Most people between the Turkish-Iranian mountains and the Mediterranean, Indian Ocean and Egypt were Semitic. It is a language designation - a subgroup of Afro-Asiatic like Germanic is a sub-group of Indo-European. Like Germanic there are groups within that (West Semitic - Hebrew, Aramaic etc; West Germanic - Dutch, English etc.; North Semitic - Babylonian, Assyrian etc.; North Germanic - Scandinavian; South Semitic - Arabic etc.; South Germanic - Hochdeutsch i.e. German etc.). Ancient Egyptian (Hamitic) the Ethiopian languages and Berber etc. are the Afro part of the Afro-Asiatic. The name comes from Shem the son of Noah in the Bible.
