I wonder how many of the pilots that want to have guns in the cockpit would be willing to submit themselves for the kind of extended training and regular practice required to use a gun safely and effectively in close quarters, surrounded by panicked civilians, with uncertain target identification, in a pressurized environment where a misdirected round could result in a crash.

I think they'd be much better off with a fortified cockpit and the ability, under extreme circumstances, to release an incapacitating gas into the passenger compartment.
