Re: I started developing a theory that maybe the people at these cash-based-paying companies weren't quite smart enough to figure out the total compensation package was actually lower there

In retrospect, things didn't turn out quite as expected for many of the option holders. What percentage of option holders cashed out in time, do you think?

"maybe the people at these cash-based-paying companies weren't quite smart enough to figure out the total compensation package was actually lower there"

Maybe they are just honest enough to realize that the
"stock-motivated" companies are basically a scam of
the Earth, and simply are not comfortable to work for
them? The motivation by stock price frequently dictates
bad short-term-oriented technical and other decisions,
and heavy stock hyping. By cashing the options out, you
sell an overhyped stock to unsuspicious sucker: this
is the name of a game. Period. You cannot exclude the
"Enron-style abuse", as you worded it, the "enronia"
is inherently built into the motivation.
