Joel,
Son-in-law is a AA pilot (used to be TWA pilot). His father was also a TWA pilot and flew one of the first Constellations they ordered. Back in those days, pilots were allowed to carry handguns if there was US mail in the hole
Son-in-law says - contrary to some fears, a bullet puncture of the skin of the aircraft will not cause the feared picture of people being sucked out of the window - a la the James Bond movie. Decompression could occur, O2 masks drop, pilot decends to safe level, blood on carpet from the terrorist and maybe a passenger or two, aircraft and rest of passengers saved along with intended target.
