Both states have very large deer herds. Published May 23, 2002 WAUSAU, Wis. (AP) -- A fatal deer disease recently found in southwestern Wisconsin probably has been in the state at least four years, a wildlife administrator said Thursday night. " We do not have any idea why this disease occurred here, " said Sarah Hurley, deputy land administrator for the state Department of Natural Resources, at a public meeting on chronic wasting disease that was attended by about 150 people. " We can' t tell you positively it is not in other parts of the state, " Hurley said. She estimated it likely will take at least three years of testing deer killed each fall by hunters before it' s known whether the disease exists elsewhere. So far, 18 deer shot in the Mount Horeb area have tested positive for the disease, which causes deer to wither and die. The DNR wants to eradicate the deer population in the general area of Mount Horeb and greatly reduce the population of deer in a surrounding area in hope of preventing the disease from spreading. " It makes me sick to my stomach to see what is happening here, " said Don Roberts, a deer hunter from Wausau. " This is a serious disease. You are kind of playing with a time bomb. I respect what you are doing. You' ve got my support." Hurley said Colorado has been dealing with the disease for about 30 years, and there' s no evidence it has been transmitted to other wild animals, such as raccoons, wolves or coyotes. State Sen. Russ Decker, D-Weston, moderated the meeting. The DNR previously held meetings in Mount Horeb, Eau Claire, Rhinelander, Waukesha and Green Bay. -------- Any thoughts on VRNT? Recent security IPO that is looking for a bottom.
