I do not think that systems design would be any more conducive to critical thinking than mathematics.

Math is good, too, IMO. The advantage of implementing systems is that you get real feedback when you err, thus learning from mistakes, unlike philosophy.

I mention those authors specifically because they demonstrate how to engage in dialectic, which is the proper term for critical thinking.

Perhaps you and I have something slightly different in mind. I had in mind simply the analysis, synthesis, and evaluation of ideas. Or more simply put, the ability to think one's way out of a paper bag.
