You are right, math does involve some useful discipline. I just think it is insufficient. But you may be right, I may expect substantially more from "critical thinking". You are right, getting simple distinctions should be within the ken of a normal adult, without much education.

I never have understood how people can go on about life long learning, and then defend the fact that their graduates have learned little. As I said, one needs a good fund of general knowledge, even if it will be supplemented by extra research, to think critically. (One of the reasons I am so good at research is that I know so much in the first place, I know where and how to look for things more often than not). Dismissing the ignorance of college graduates does everyone a disservice.......
