These will be upgraded versions of Pakistan’s indigenously made medium and short-range missiles – Ghauri, Shaheen and a new short-range rocket, Haider-I, which is capable of carrying a small nuclear warhead and has been developed at the Project Management Organisation (PMO) near Khanpur with the help of Chinese assistance, highly placed defence sources told Daily Times. “The objective is to fine-tune the guidance systems of the missiles that have already been tested,” the sources said. The recently produced missiles will be loaded with mock nuclear war-heads of different weights to gauge their performance, the sources added. “We simply want to demonstrate and reassure the nation that Pakistan has a fully-operational and accurate delivery system and must not be taken lightly”, officials said. Sources at the National Defence Complex said progress on enhancing and fool-proofing the missiles’ guidance systems has been tremendous and needed to be reaffirmed through actual test-firing. “President Musharraf may take some steps to address Indian concerns and appease the international community that has been virtually breathing down our necks on the issue Kashmir militancy, but giving the go-ahead for the missile tests is a moral-boosting exercise which the armed forces and the people in general need,” said officials. Mobile launchers and at least two missiles each have already been transported to the test sites – one near Dera Ghazi Khan and the other near Somiani on the Arabian Sea. Technical teams from the National Defence Complex, Kahutta Research Laboratories and the PMO have been preparing for the tests since early this week. In 1999, Ghauri-11 was fired from Tilla and tested for a range of 1,300 kilometres with a payload of under 1,000 kgs, and Shaheen-11 for a range of six hundred kilometres “The Ghauri test had to be relocated from Tilla near Jehlum to another site in DG Khan to avoid overlapping with the air-corridor that was granted to US-led anti-terrorism forces last October for their efforts in Afghanistan. The corridor covers the area between Pasni, Gwadar, and Jacobabad. But the target areas are still located somewhere in Balochistan. Dr Javed Mirza, chief of KRL and Dr Samar Mubarikmand of NDC are already on the site with General Kidwai of the Strategic Plans Division (SPD) expected to fly into DG Khan early Saturday for the tests that are set to begin between 7-8 am. “Unless there is an overnight change of heart by the government for international considerations, we are all set to begin the tests Saturday , an auspicious day since it is the birth anniversary of Prophet Mohammed (pbuh) - Miladun-Nabi,” sources said. Continued Indian bellicosity, heavy troop deployment along the borders with Pakistan, recent test-firing of Agni-11, Akash and a cruise missile in cooperation with Russia are some of the factors that forced Pakistan into the missile tests, an official pointed out.
