I don't know who is wringing their hands, but the die is cast, and Russia has the option of emerging, or shrinking if Putin listens to the old cold-warriors. Even the gangsters are on his side, as I understand it. Too much money to be made, once outside the narrow field of obsolete cold-war politics. The inevitable moving towards global trade may have some of the personality overtones you describe, or they may be imagination. Either way, it's happening.
