The bottom line is that those who accepted the need to think about how they thought moved on to the next level of complexity and the others didn't.

Adaptability is one key element used to measure IQ...Perhaps it could be employed as a measure of Critical thinking ability as well. Then one has to determine if the ability is there and some individuals are choosing not to make the effort...as you seem to suggest.
