OT: I think we're already seeing that. Not officially, but de facto. The FBI has been redirected to antiterrorism, and that means less attention is paid to everything else. "Everything else" includes a lot of anti-drug operations. In many police forces, little effort is put into enforcing anti-marijuana laws. As a physician, I've seen many, many lives, careers, and families destroyed by alcohol and cocaine, but none by marijuana. This affects what I talk to patients about. The medical community is certainly focused on the real mass killers: tobacco, alcohol, cocaine.

Also keep in mind, Cary, that the folks in power are playing a CYA game. People are starting to notice that they've dropped the ball on a number of things (trade, personal liberties, the economy, and oh, security...). So, now they are shouting "look, look, in the sky..." hoping to draw attention away from their many shortcomings.
