It is Memorial Day weekend. A time of remembrance. Americans remember their war dead this weekend. We war survivors wish each other a Happy Memorial Day.

24 former and surviving members of the US Army 5th Special Forces Group, who have been imprisoned and oppressed continuously, since we abandoned them on the battlefields of Vietnam 30 years ago, will be liberated along with their families beginning next week. Their crimes were being Pro-American and fighting for their freedom.

These men are among the surviving members of a group of 55,000 men who were recruited, trained and paid by America to fight for America in Vietnam. Really no different than every native born son who we recruited or drafted. We do not know how many of these men are left alive. We do have reports that tens of thousands of America's Montagnard supporters were slaughtered after we left.

They will be coming with a total of 905 Montagnard family members. Six weeks ago these people were eking out a meager survival existence in the Cambodian jungle after fleeing Vietnam. Because of their Special Forces Green Beret service and subsequent oppression and imprisonment they have been approved for fast track immigration and will begin arriving in America on June 5th. All are settling in North Carolina, the home of Special Forces.

These folks will arrive with the clothes on their backs and a small bag of paperwork. 200+ children are in this group.

Green Berets around the world and other vets and civilians have been contributing to a fund established one month ago. The donations have been generous but very insufficient. We have had sufficient clothing and children's toys already donated. We still need large quantities of blankets, single beds and bedding, living, dining and bedroom furnishings and funds for a 1-2 month supply of food and rice cookers...and to buy needed items not donated. We also need entry level jobs in Greensboro, Raleigh and Charlotte, NC.

I have been appointed by the US Army National Special Forces Association to manage and coordinate the effort. I am not paid for this nor are the dozen other Green Beret retirees assisting me. We have assisted other Montagnard families over the past 17 years and always managed to provide for them from our own resources. This time is different because so many are arriving at one time. 905 people needing over 200 households. We are reaching out to everyone we know and asking you to help us help these former fighters for America.

Please do not do nothing because you can only do a little.

There is a lot of honor at stake here. America is being given an opportunity to right a terrible wrong. The honor of every Green Beret who fought in Vietnam is on the line too and they are all voluntarily responding. The motto of the Green Berets is "De Oppresso Liber"..."Liberate The Oppressed". Will you assist us in liberating these oppressed freedom fighters.

Tax free Donations can be mailed to:
US Army Special Forces Association
PO Box 41436
Fayetteville, NC 28309

Write the word Montagnard on the envelope or your check. 100% of all donations will go directly from Green Beret to Montagnard hands. Zero overhead is deducted.

All donors will be recognized in the Special Forces Association quarterly magazine called "The Drop".

Lutheran Family Services, The Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society, World Relief and Catholic Social Services Refugee resettlement are also assisting and accepting donations for this effort.

These are the words to taps. This song is played by a bugler at every Memorial Day service and at every veteran's military funeral.

Day is done ...
Gone the sun ...
From the lakes ...
From the hills .
From the sky ...
All is well ...
Safely rest ...
God is nigh .
Fading light ...
Dims the sight ...
And a star ...
Gems the sky ...
Gleaming bright ...
From afar ...
Drawing nigh ...
Falls the night ...
Thanks and praise ...
For our days ...
Neath the sun ...
Neath the stars...
Neath the sky ...
As we go ...
This we know ...
God is nigh ...

Happy Memorial Day.
