What is a little annoying is going to be paying social security taxes that I didn't have to even pay up front last time. Until you work 10 years in the US as an LPR or become US citizen you will never be able to claim any benefit from it.

That's a bummer. But have you verified for sure that your University is in the Social Security system?

Some state and local governments in the US opted out of the Social Security System years ago. I was employed in this situation for many years and the employee/employer contributions that would have gone to SS went into a separate retirement system. When I quit I was able to roll these contributions and their accumulated earnings over into an IRA, and it was a pretty big chunk of change.
