I've overall been pretty happy with cable and the cable modem. It's worked just about all of the time. It depends on where one actually is in terms of how good the quality of the cable is. This area had cable layed long enough ago that it was very ancient until TWX came in and upgraded the lines 2 years ago. it underscores your point that experiences will differ based upon exactly what one's physical situation is.
