Also there are just so many US funds I never knew even where to start.

It's crazy. I think we have more funds than stocks, but we're starting to see some consolidation now that the bubble popped. My father just received notice that one of his small independent funds is folding up and returning all capital to the owners.

I'd say Vanguard is a good place to start, because they have some of the lowest management fees... flagship.vanguard.com
