Police foil suicide bomb attempt in Northwest China
(03/28/2002) (China Daily)

Local police successfully stopped a suicide explosion in a restaurant on Tuesday afternoon in Xi'an, capital of Northwest China's Shaanxi Province.

"At about 2:00 pm on Tuesday, we received a telephone call, saying that a man had rushed into a restaurant in the city's eastern suburbs with explosives, threatening to blow the place up," said Lu Zhongxue, director of Dongguan Police Station of Xi'an Public Security Bureau.

The police immediately went to the restaurant and saw a man in his 40s holding a white coloured bottle and a lighter in his hands, with some detonators strapped to his body.

"We calmed the man and he told us that the restaurant owed him 1,500 yuan (US$182) in salary, which he had asked for many times," Lu said.

The police asked the restaurant to prepare 1,500 yuan and told the man not to fire the detonators, then they gave the money to him and after talking to him for some time got him to surrender, according to the director.
