SPY and MDY are comparable to the Vanguard Index funds, but Vanguard also has various managed stock and bond funds for those who want such products.

For example, they have a pretty good inflation-protected bond fund (VIPSX). I opted to buy these bonds directly though, to avoid paying their annual operating fee of 0.25%.

I have even less clue about US closed end funds.

Have you looked at IShares? They have over 70 different index funds that trade like stocks... ishares.com
